ZUNYITE

Zunyite is a rare aluminum sorosilicate that is composed of aluminum, silicon, hydrogen, chlorine, oxygen, and fluorine. It is a highly desirable mineral that forms in near perfect, beveled tetrahedral crystals. It can be found as contact and/or penetration twins. A particularly hard mineral, it is considered a 7 on the Mohs scale. Zunyite is well-known for its high aluminum content and short-wave ultraviolet light reactivity, where it fluoresces a brilliant cherry red color. Fine crystallized specimens are considered extremely rare and are only found in a few places worldwide, most notably, Iran. Zunyite occurs in highly aluminous shales and hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks, most often in association with other minerals such as pyrophyllite, kaolinite, alunite, rutile, pyrite, hematite and quartz. It is named for the Zuni Mine in Colorado, from which it was originally identified and classified. Historically, tiny zunyite crystals have been discovered in Guatemalan Mayan graves, where they seemingly have been used within the art of jewelry making, as a pigment for paint, and as a rare trade item for burial offerings.
