VANADINITE
Vanadinite is a member of the apatite group, a group of isomorphous hexagonal minerals. It has a Mohs hardness of 3-4 and a chemical formula of Pb5(VO4)3Cl. A dense but brittle mineral, it is typically discovered as striking red-orange hexagonal crystals; however, brown, grey, yellow, and even colorless examples have also been discovered. Vanadinite is an uncommon mineral that is formed by the oxidation of lead ore deposits; as such, it is considered a minor source of lead, while also being a critical resource for the production of vanadium. As a primary mineral for vanadium production, vanadinite is considered absolutely essential for the creation of high-strength metal alloys within the aerospace and automotive industries.
VANADINITE HISTORY AND USES
Vanadinite was first discovered in 1801 by Spanish-Mexican scientist and naturalist Andrés Manuel del Río, who named it "brown lead" in reference to its coloration and significant lead content; however, it would be lost to the history books for decades until being officially rediscovered and named in the year 1838. During the minerals historical hiatus, Swedish chemist Nils Gabriel Sefström discovered the element vanadium in the year 1830. Sefström named the element in homage to the Norse goddess Vanadis, which was another name for the Norse goddess Freyja. Lost to the history books for decades, Manuel del Rio’s “brown lead” was inevitably renamed by German mineralogist Franz von Kobell in the year 1838, where it was formally called vanadinite to reflect upon its chemical composition.
Today, vanadinite is primarily used as a major industrial ore for the extraction of vanadium, where it is used as a key element in the production of steel and the manufacturing of high-strength alloys for tools, automobiles, and jet engines. Additionally, vanadinite is considered a terrific mineral for collection enthusiasts, where it is frequently found in association with white or black barite and dark colored galena, which tends to provide striking color contrasts against vanadinites well-formed, red-orange hexagonal crystals. VANADINITE METAPHYSICS
Metaphysically, vanadinite is considered a powerful, foundational crystal of the Root and Sacral Chakras. It is said that vanadinite can be used to boost energy, creativity, and motivation, as well as aid in the process of overcoming procrastination habits and poor-focus. Vanadinite is said to facilitate grounded thought patterns while promoting discipline in the performance and execution of small (but consequential) daily tasks. Physically, vanadinite is said to be a wonderful aid for stabilizing hormone levels and menstrual cycles, as well as providing positive, healing energies to the kidneys and bladder. Additionally, vanadinite is said to be an excellent crystal for combating chronic fatigue and exhaustion.
