SHATTUCKITE

Shattuckite is a light to dark blue copper inosilicate hydroxide with the chemical formula of Cu5(SiO3)4(OH)2. It has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 and crystallizes in the orthorhombic-di pyramidal crystal system. It is a considered a secondary mineral that is found within oxidation zones in copper deposits; the same way malachite, dioptase, and chrysocolla most often form. Shattuckite is exceedingly rare and named after the original 1915 mine in which it was discovered: the Shattuck Mine in Bisbee, Arizona. At the Shattuck Mine, it forms as pseudomorphs after malachite and is considered a minor ore of copper. A pseudomorph is considered an atom-by-atom replacement of a specific crystalline structure by another crystalline structure, but with little alteration of the outward shape of the original structure.
