SEPTARIAN

Septarian nodules are concretions containing angular cavities or cracks, called septaria. The word comes from the Latin word septum, or partition, and refers to the 7 point cracking pattern that is associated with this kind of rock. Septarian nodules from Madagascar likely formed during the Middle to Late Jurassic period, roughly 160 million years ago. Madagascan deposits sometimes contain the fossilized remains of Middle Jurassic ammonite fossils, further cementing these ancient concretions to the very distant Jurassic past. Evidence suggests that septarian nodules first developed within shallow lakes, and as the tide caused a mass to roll back and forth the size of the mass gradually increased. During the summer months, as the water receded, the mud mass would proceed to dry out and cause it to crack. Over lengthy expanses in time, the cracks slowly filled with minerals such as calcite and/or aragonite that was left behind from the shell remains of dead marine animals. This process of sedimentation, dehydration, and inevitable mineralization is what creates the interesting and unique septaria that is most associated with the beautiful rock.

SEPTARIAN HISTORY AND USES

Interestingly, Malagasy folklore attributes the unique, cracked appearance of septarian nodules to that of ancient dragon eggs, bearing allusion to the theory that dragons once lived and then later fossilized into the earth, becoming part of the seafloor. Because of this legend, septarian is sometimes referred to as "dragon stone" or "dragon eggs".

SEPTARIAN METAPHYSICS

Metaphysically, septarian is considered a grounding and structural stone that is best associated with the Root Chakra. It is to be considered a conglomerate of stability and comfort, and is said to aid its user by facilitating energies of foundation and strength, especially when faced with difficult life decisions and necessary processes. Septarian is also considered a stone of happiness and fulfillment, an allusion to the cracks that sometimes form within our lives, but when given time, patience, and the proper approach, can be later filled with intricately patterned designs of rich, beautiful color. A statement that allows its user to find comfort in the processes and then joy in the solutions.

Physically, septarian is said to aid the body with intestinal discomfort, calcium absorption in the bones, immune system response, and mental motivation. It is also said aid the body with tissue healing and skin disorders.
