PYROMORPHITE

Pyromorphite is a mineral species composed of lead chlorophosphite, with a chemical formula of Pb5(PO4)3Cl. Pyromorphite crystallizes within the hexagonal crystal structure, has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4, and a specific gravity of 6.5 to 7.1- indicating its heavy nature due to its incorporation of lead content. It is most often discovered as a secondary lead mineral and is almost always found in the oxidation zone of lead deposits. These lead deposits form within arid climates resulting from the alteration of vanadiferous (vanadium yielding) sulfides and silicates. Pyromorphite is typically green, yellow, or brown, but can also be white, colorless, or even multi-colored. Some specimens are accompanied by a rare, blue colored lead based mineral called Plumbogummite. Additionally, pyromorphite is also found alongside other minerals such as cerussite, limonite, wulfenite, galena, vanadinite, and aurichalcite.

PYROMORPHITE HISTORY AND USES

The name pyromorphite is derived from the Greek phrase for "pyr", or fire, and "morfe" meaning to form. This is in allusion to the fact that the mineral crystallizes into a recognizable shape when melted and then cooled. German mineralogist, geologist, and mining expert J. F. L. Hausmann gave the mineral this name in 1813 to describe this distinctive behavior. Today, pyromorphite is found in many lead mining regions worldwide, with notable occurrences in several countries; Some of the most significant localities for high quality pyromorphite crystals include Germany, France, the USA, and China. While it does contain a high percentage of lead, pyromorphite is still considered a minor ore, with the primary commercial source of lead being galena. In addition, pyromorphite has been unofficially adopted as the state mineral of Pennsylvania, and has earned this designation as a result of the beautiful olive-green variety of crystals found at the famed Wheatley Mine; this, in conjunction with the state’s ongoing reluctance to select a specific mineral for the nomination.
