PETRIFIED WOOD

Petrified wood, from Ancient Greek meaning 'wood turned to stone', is the name given to the mineralized remains of ancient wood. Petrification is the result of a tree having been replaced by stone via a specific mineralization process. During this process, the original organic material, more specifically the wood cells, are replaced by minerals; most often silica in the form of chalcedony, quartz, and rarely opal. This replacement process preserves the original wood structure and sometimes even its cellular details. The petrification process begins when a tree is buried in wet sediment that has high concentrations of dissolved minerals. These conditions could be a result of natural processes, such as volcanic mud flow or ash, or sometimes landslides or flooding. The lack of oxygen slows the decay of the organic material, allowing for minerals to replace the cell walls and fill the void spaces within the wood. The result is the fossilized remains of what was once wood, but is now considered stone. The stone will often resemble the wood shape and texture, displaying patterns that resemble the original bark and grain. In addition, the fossilized material may also display a wide range of colors. This is due to the combinations of trace mineral inclusions within its composition.


PETRIFIED WOOD HISTORY AND USES

Petrified wood has been discovered at many locations worldwide and is considered a unique variation of fossil. Unlike other fossils that are commonly seen as impression or compression types, petrified wood is a three-dimensional representation of the organic material, preserving its external shape and internal structure. The process of petrification has been shown to occur in as short as decades, while in other instances taking upwards of millions of years, with some examples dating all the way back to the Devonian Period, roughly 400 million years ago! Rapid petrification can occur when there is an abundance of minerals in the groundwater and the wood is rapidly buried; whereas, slow petrification is a much more common natural phenomena, especially in geologic contexts where the wood is buried under layers of sediment and then exposed and re-exposed to mineral-rich water over extended periods of time. Historically, humans have interacted with petrified wood throughout much of known history, often using it for tools, talismans, and within spiritual practices. Scientifically speaking, petrified wood has provided valuable information about past ecosystems, including the types of trees that existed, the climate, and environmental conditions. Furthermore, petrified wood can also be used to date rock layers and create understanding around certain geological processes.

Metaphysically, petrified wood is considered a stone of balance, grounding, and transformation. It is said that petrified wood can offer supportive and structural energy that allows for stability in personal endeavors and also relationships. Additionally, it is said that meditating with the material creates an excellent opportunity for grounding high vibrations and positive frequencies into the Earth, while allowing for the potential of ancient wisdom to come to the surface. Physically, petrified wood is said to aid the body with afflictions of the muscles, bones, feet, and back. It is also said that it can aid the body with physical limitations resulting from natural aging processes, bringing added vitality and strength when it is most needed.
