CROCOITE

Crocoite, once known as Red Lead Ore, is a rare lead chromate mineral with the chemical formula of PbCrO₄. It forms in the oxidized zone of lead deposits and hydrothermal veins, in association with other lead-based minerals such as pyromorphite and cerussite. It crystallizes within the monoclinic crystal system as extremely delicate masses of prismatic, long tubular (almost needle-like) formations of acicular crystals. Crocoite is chemically unique, containing a high percentage of lead and chromium, giving it high density. It is also very soft, and is represented on the Mohs hardness scale as 2.5 to 3. Well developed crystals are exceedingly rare and incredibly fragile, and most often this makes the mining, extraction, and preparation a painstaking process, further adding to the desire and value of the material.

CROCOITE HISTORY AND USES

Crocoite was originally discovered in the year 1766, within the rough terrain of the Russian Ural Mountains; however, it wasn’t officially reported as the mineral name “Crocoite” until French mineralogist François Sulpice Beudant declared it so in the year 1832. He named it after the Greek word “krokos”, which is associated with the term for the Saffron flower, which also bares a vibrant orange color likeness. Interestingly, Saffron is called krokos (κρόκος) in Greek, which is a term derived from the name of the mythical figure Crocus, who was transformed into the saffron flower after he was accidentally killed by Hermes during a game of discus.

Historically, only small amounts of very tiny prismatic crystals of crocoite were ever found in Russia (and for that matter throughout Europe), until there was a major discovery in 1895 at the Hazelwood lead-silver mine in Tasmania. Today, exquisite crystals of crocoite are very rare, with true collector specimens being mined at only a few localities worldwide; most notably within Dundas, Tasmania and Colorado, USA.

CROCOITE METAPHYSICS

Metaphysically, crocoite is considered a high-frequency crystal that stimulates the Root, Sacral, and Heart Chakras, promoting grounded emotions, physical vitality, and creative expression. It is also considered a powerful aid for transformative action and transition, allowing its user the opportunity to find purpose and passions in their goals and work-life. In addition, crocoite can be a powerful crystal for creating strong bonds and healthy relationships. Physically, crocoite is said to stimulate the fatigued body and aid in healthy muscle growth. Furthermore, it is said that it can be a terrific aid to nervous system response.

*Due to crocoite containing lead, it is considered toxic to the human body. It is recommended to wash your hands after handling and avoid inhaling any dust when fracturing.
